Joel Chandler Harris (December 9, – July 3, ) was an American journalist, fiction writer, and folklorist best known for his collection of Uncle Remus stories. Born in Eatonton, Georgia, where he served as an apprentice on a plantation during his teenage years, Harris spent most of his adult life in Atlanta working as an associate editor at the Atlanta : December 9, , Eatonton, Georgia, United States.

      In Harris published a volume of these folktales, together with old plantation songs, pithy sayings, and Remus's Atlanta street-sketches, as Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings. Harris would gather six more volumes of Uncle Remus stories during his lifetime, including, in , a revised edition of his first book, illustrated by A. B. Frost.
